Vacations in the Bavarian Forest - there is so much to discover!

"Bemalter Wald" - an art project on the Burgstallweg

“Bemalter Wald” – an art project on Burgstallweg

Along the approximately one kilometer long hiking trail, a section of the oldest mule track in the Bavarian Forest, the Baierweg, art and nature enter into an interesting symbiosis with the “painted forest” project.

Colorful open-air gallery in the forest

In the summer and fall of 2015, a new tourist and artistic feature was created on the Burgstallweg, a local recreational hiking trail in Kollnburg.
Ten artists from Kollnburg and other communities in the district of Regen have created abstract art in various designs, some of which are spread across several trees and rows of trees and on stones. Animals such as owls, butterflies or fish, but mainly abstract forms, mosaics, circles or symmetrical figures give free rein to the viewer’s imagination. When you look at some of the stones, you think you are in the Shire of the hobbits from the movie “The Lord of the Rings”. This fantasy is directly linked to the beauty of the forest path. Hundreds of spray cans, all environmentally friendly and approved by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, were used.
The original idea came from local couple Waltraud and Hanspeter Uhl, who were inspired during a vacation trip. The result is an unusual and interesting symbiosis between abstract art and nature.

Burgstallweg trail

The intention here was not to create a “kitsch or fairytale forest”, but rather a collection of abstract art that gives free rein to the imagination and interpretation of the respective viewer at any time of day, while at the same time directly linking to the beauty of this forest path.
At the same time, the series of paintings harmonizes with the beauty of the Burgstallweg, a section of the Baierweg that leads along the roof of Kollnburg and offers many a magnificent panoramic view far out to the mountain range around the Arber. The old path, which leads through the site of the prehistoric castle stable, connects the upper and lower village. At the highest point, popularly known as “Liebesfelsen”, there is an imposing wooden cross where visitors can rest on a wooden bench and enjoy the scenery
If you continue walking from Burgstallweg (Schulstr. 14) in the direction of the church, the romantic Pfarrgartenweg leads below the parish garden over the castle hill into the castle courtyard. A view from the castle tower to the highest peaks of the Bavarian Forest is an absolute “must” here.
